Strong Atmospheric River Causes Devastation throughout California

More treacherous weather has engulfed Northern California, in what is the first of a series of atmospheric rivers to sweep into the state. People in Tracy, South Lake Tahoe, and Sacramento were among those hit hardest by the storm, resulting in two fatalities, power outages affecting 41,000 residences, and evacuation orders issued to 9,400 people. Governor Newsom has requested and President Biden has granted a state of emergency declaration, freeing up funds for those affected.

In the Sacramento area, rescue teams responded as an 81-year-old was stuck in a snowbank for nearly a week, surviving on croissants and candy. Record rainfall was logged in Hearst Castle in Monterey County, where 11.61 inches and 8.36 inches were reported. San Mateo County's Pacifica also saw a pernicious 13.41 inches of precipitation.
