According to a new assessment by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), Ukraine's strikes on key bridges linking the annexed Crimean peninsula to southern Ukraine and mainland Russia are having an impact on Moscow's ability to move resources and defend against Ukraine's counteroffensive. The assessment suggests that these strikes are part of a deliberate campaign to interdict Russian logistics and set the stage for larger counteroffensive operations. Ukraine has been focusing its counteroffensive on southern and eastern Ukraine, including the annexed Kherson region. However, throughout the war and in the years prior, Ukraine has consistently expressed its intention to retake Crimea, which has been under Russian control since 2014. Moscow has accused Ukraine of repeatedly targeting the Chonhar Bridge, which connects Kherson and Crimea, and the Kerch Bridge, which connects Crimea to mainland Russia. The ISW report confirms that previous Ukrainian strikes on these bridges have disrupted Russian logistics. Russia's Defense Ministry has recently blamed Ukraine for attempting to strike the Kerch Bridge using a converted S-200 surface-to-air guided missile. Ukraine has also been launching drones at Crimea, but many have been destroyed by air defenses.
