Will Strong Winds and Low Humidity Increase Fire Danger in Hawaii?

The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for leeward portions of all Hawaiian Islands due to strong winds and low humidity. Very dry fuels, combined with gusty easterly winds reaching speeds of 30 to 45 mph with gusts up to 60 mph, are creating critical fire weather conditions. The warning will remain in effect until 6 PM HST on Wednesday.

The warning advises against outdoor burning and warns that any fires that develop are likely to spread rapidly. The combination of strong winds, low relative humidity, and warm temperatures can contribute to extreme fire behavior. While the warning does not predict new fire starts, it serves as a reminder for residents to exercise caution and take preventive measures.

In addition to the Red Flag Warning, a Small Craft Advisory is also in effect until 6 PM HST on Wednesday. East winds of 20 to 30 kt and seas ranging from 8 to 13 feet are expected. Boaters are advised to exercise caution and consider postponing any non-essential trips.

Residents are encouraged to secure loose outdoor items, be aware of hazardous driving conditions caused by crosswinds, and stay updated on the latest weather advisories.
