A Southern California judge has been charged with murder after allegedly text messaging his court clerk and bailiff to inform them that he had shot his wife. Orange County Superior Court Judge Jeffrey Ferguson, 72, was arrested last week after his adult son called 911 to report the shooting. According to court documents, Ferguson texted minutes after the incident, stating, "I just lost it. I just shot my wife. I won't be in tomorrow. I will be in custody. I'm so sorry." Ferguson is currently free on $1 million bail. Prosecutors are seeking new bail conditions to protect public safety and ensure that he does not flee the country. Authorities found 47 weapons, including the pistol used in the shooting, and over 26,000 rounds of ammunition at Ferguson's Anaheim home. While the weapons are legally owned, one rifle registered in his name is still missing. The shooting occurred after an argument between Ferguson and his wife at a restaurant, which continued at their home. A court document states that his wife said something to the effect of "why don't you point a real gun at me?", prompting Ferguson to pull out a pistol and shoot her in the chest.
