Did Severe Weather Affect High School Football Season Opener in Michigan?

Despite severe weather conditions, some high schools in Michigan were able to kick off their 2023 football season. However, not all games were completed due to the weather. Two games were finished, with Holland Christian defeating Holland, 42-6, and West Ottawa losing to Grand Ledge, 37-30. The Stevensville Lakeshore at Zeeland West game was suspended and will be resumed today, while the Williamston at Zeeland East game will be played this evening. The Buchanan at Saugatuck game is scheduled for later today, and the Fennville at Our Lady of the Lake 8-man match will take place tomorrow evening.

In the Blue Water Area, several games were postponed due to lightning. Algonac at Vassar, Anchor Bat at Port Huron, and Marysville at Almont were all affected by the severe weather. These games will be resumed or played at a later date. The Croswell-Lexington vs. Saginaw Swan Valley game was called with 5:05 remaining in the second quarter, with Cros-Lex leading 22-7.

Despite the weather challenges, some teams were able to complete their games and secure wins, including Grosse Pointe South and Yale. However, the extent of the impact of severe weather on the high school football season opener in Michigan is yet to be determined.
