The Financial Services Regulatory Authority of Ontario (FSRA) has revealed that all 12 of the province's largest auto insurance companies have been involved in intentional violations of rules surrounding fair access to coverage. The regulator conducted extensive investigations and found that certain types of consumers, such as those with prior claims or without property coverage, were being hindered in their ability to obtain insurance quotes. Insurers were found to be slowing down quote processes, refusing coverage to those who met their approved underwriting rules, or simply not responding to consumers. To address these issues, the FSRA has imposed administrative penalties totaling $300,000 against Aviva Insurance Company of Canada and S&Y Insurance Company.
The FSRA's findings raise concerns about the fairness and accessibility of auto insurance in Ontario. The regulator's efforts to resolve industry-wide violations of fair access rules aim to ensure that all consumers have equal opportunities to obtain coverage. This news serves as a reminder to consumers to be aware of their rights and to compare quotes from different insurance providers to ensure they are getting the coverage that meets their needs.
