State of Emergency Declared in West Virginia as Heavy Flooding Continues

Heavy rainfall in central West Virginia has caused major flash floods and led to a state of emergency being declared for several counties. Kanawha, Braxton, Calhoun, Clay, and Roane counties are under a state of emergency, according to West Virginia Gov. Jim Justice. The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood emergency for Kanawha County, which received 3 to 6 inches of rain on Monday alone. Local reports show streets, homes, and cars submerged in murky water. The West Virginia Division of Highways is working to clear culverts, assess damage, and perform water rescues in the affected areas. As of Monday morning, there had already been 22 water rescues in Kanawha County and surrounding areas. Showers and thunderstorms are expected to continue through Tuesday, with areas near the mountains at greater risk for high water issues. Residents are advised to seek higher ground and not to drive through high water.
