On Saturday, March 5th, a cargo train traveling southbound from Bellevue, Ohio to Birmingham, Alabama derailed near Springfield Township, Ohio. Approximately 28 of the train’s 212 cars derailed, including four empty tankers. Thankfully, no public or crew injuries were reported, but the Clark County Emergency Management Agency did issue a precautionary shelter in place order for those living within 1,000 feet of the site.
Transport Secretary Pete Buttigieg was briefed by the Federal Railroad Administration, and gave assurance that no hazardous material was released. Nevertheless, the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency deployed a Hazmat team as a precautionary measure.
