Proud Boys Sentencing Over January 6 Riot Rescheduled

The sentencing hearings for Enrique Tarrio and Ethan Nordean, leaders of the far-right Proud Boys group, have been rescheduled due to a medical issue. Tarrio and Nordean were convicted of serious conspiracy in their efforts to stop Joe Biden from becoming president following the 2020 election. Originally scheduled for Wednesday, the hearings will now take place later this week and early next week. Family members of the defendants and their attorneys were upset by the sudden rescheduling and are now working to adjust their travel plans. Prosecutors have requested a sentence of 33 years for Tarrio and 27 years for Nordean.

The trial did not directly link Tarrio or the Proud Boys to anyone in the Trump administration who may have helped organize the January 6th riot at the Capitol. However, the trial provided a clear view of how the rioters were motivated to launch physical attacks on police and overrun barricades with the Proud Boys at the front lines. Three other members of the Proud Boys are also facing sentencing this week. Prosecutors have sought prison sentences ranging from 20 to 33 years for the defendants. The prosecutors applied a "terrorism enhancement" to the sentencing, which would result in longer prison terms, given the nature and seriousness of the defendants' crimes.
