According to new research from the Center for Sports Analytics at Samford University, Alabama Crimson Tide fans outnumber Auburn fans in 13 of the state's 20 largest cities. The research analyzed social media data and found that for every ten Auburn fans in the state, there are approximately 23 Alabama Crimson Tide fans. The concentration of Alabama fans is particularly strong in cities like Huntsville and Mobile, with the gap between Alabama and Auburn fans becoming even more pronounced the further away from the center of the state. In the cities of Tuscaloosa and Northport, the home bases of the Alabama Crimson Tide, the fan ratio is about 29 Alabama fans for every Auburn fan. However, in the city of Auburn itself, there are about 22 Auburn fans per one Alabama fan.

Despite the intense rivalry between the two teams, the research also revealed that only 38% of residents across the state actually follow either Alabama or Auburn football, or both. This number increases significantly in areas that house the football giants, such as Tuscaloosa and Auburn, where the percentages of residents following the teams are 67% and 73% respectively.
