Will Geert Wilders Become Prime Minister of the Netherlands?

Following the recent parliamentary elections in the Netherlands, Geert Wilders, the leader of the anti-Islam Party for Freedom (PVV), has expressed his ambition to become the country's prime minister. Despite his party winning the most seats, forming a government may prove challenging as the PVV fell well short of a majority. Wilders will need to reach out to other moderate parties to gain support.

While the PVV had a strong showing in the election, winning around 25% of the seats in parliament, cooperation from other parties will be necessary to form a government. The VVD Party, which shares many of Wilders' views on immigration, has already ruled out participating in a cabinet with him, although they have not ruled out offering outside support. Additionally, other moderate parties have expressed concerns about Wilders' extreme positions on issues that may violate Dutch constitutional protections on freedom of religion.

Dutch coalition talks typically take months, and positions about party willingness to work together may change over time. If Wilders is unable to form a government, other centrist combinations that exclude the PVV are still possible, while new elections could be a last resort.

As the far right gains momentum in Europe, especially with the recent victory of a far-right economist in Argentina, the outcome of the Dutch elections is being closely watched as an indication of voter sentiment against traditional politicians in the Western world.
