Former President Donald Trump and his valet have pleaded not guilty to all 37 charges in a case related to classified documents. Special counsel Jack Smith, who was appointed by Attorney General Merrick Garland, has incurred over $9 million in costs since taking on the assignment last year. The released report shows that Smith spent about $5.4 million on his own budget, with an additional $3.8 million in spending by other Justice Department agencies. The U.S. Marshals Service alone spent $1.93 million providing security for the special prosecutor. The report, however, only accounts for expenses through the end of March and does not include the period leading up to Trump's indictment in June.
Smith's investigations have generated strong reactions and he has been seen flanked by deputy marshals as he commutes to and from his office. The various probes were well underway before Smith took over and he has largely maintained the existing staffing. The report does not provide information on the costs of the investigations prior to Smith's appointment. Witnesses, including former Vice President Mike Pence, have appeared before the grand jury in the federal courthouse in Washington, D.C.
