Washington Commanders owner agrees to sell the team for a record $6 billion

The owner of the NFL team, Washington Commanders, Dan Snyder, has reached an unprecedented deal to sell the team to a group of wealthy individuals, including Philadelphia 76ers owner Josh Harris and NBA's Earvin "Magic" Johnson. The reported $6 billion deal would be the biggest transaction ever made for a US sports franchise. While the deal has been agreed upon in principle, it still required the approval of three-quarters of NFL owners before it can be finalized. If successful, the deal will surpass the record $4.6 billion sale of the Denver Broncos to the Walton family last year. Although unconfirmed, Canadian billionaire Steve Apostolopoulos is reportedly also still bidding for the team. Snyder bought the Commanders for $800 million in 1999, and Forbes currently values the team at $5.6 billion, despite ongoing legal issues and land acquisition concerns. This sale comes in the wake of accusations of sexual harassment and other misconduct allegations against Snyder and the team, leading to calls from fans for the team’s sale.
