Gunman in Custody After Killing One Person in Queens

A gunman on an illegal scooter went on a shooting spree across Brooklyn and Queens, killing one person and injuring several others, before being apprehended by police, according to the New York Police Department. The 25-year-old Hispanic male opened fire at random, targeting pedestrians and stores during a two-hour period on Saturday. The first shooting occurred in Brooklyn, where a 21-year-old man was shot in the shoulder. Seventeen minutes later, the gunman struck again in Queens, fatally shooting an 87-year-old man near a nail salon. Two more individuals were injured in subsequent shootings.

Officers from the 103 and 113 precincts spotted the shooter on his scooter and successfully took him into custody without incident near 94th Street. A 9-millimeter pistol with an extended magazine was recovered from the scooter, raising concerns about the level of violence the perpetrator intended to carry out. The motive for the shootings remains unknown, and police believe the acts were random. There is no evidence to suggest that the gunman specifically targeted any individual or group. The suspect, who had one prior arrest for a traffic violation, is now in police custody as the investigation continues.
