Salmonella Outbreak: 2 Dead, 45 Hospitalized in 32 States

A salmonella outbreak linked to cantaloupes has spread to 32 states, resulting in two deaths and 45 hospitalizations. The outbreak began with a recall of cantaloupes and melons grown by Sofia Produce in Arizona and sold under the name Trufresh. The recall includes all sizes of fresh cantaloupes packaged in cardboard containers labeled Malichita, sold between October 16 and October 23. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) revealed a map showing that 99 people in the affected states have fallen ill after consuming the contaminated fruit. The CDC warns that the number of sick people is likely higher than reported, as many individuals recover without seeking medical care and are not tested for salmonella. The true extent of the outbreak may not be known for several weeks, as it typically takes 3 to 4 weeks to determine if a sick person is part of an outbreak. Health officials in Canada are also investigating the outbreak, which has been linked to the same strain of salmonella. Consumers are advised to avoid consuming the recalled cantaloupes and to return them to the place of purchase.
