Did Ja Morant's Off-Court Incident Cost Him All-NBA Honors and a $39 Million Contract Bonus?

Memphis Grizzlies guard Ja Morant missed out on his supermax contract bonus worth $39 million over five seasons because he did not make one of the NBA All-NBA teams for the 2022-23 season. Morant's eligibility for the contract hinged on earning an All-NBA spot this season, which he fell short of, despite making the All-NBA second team last year. Morant was part of a group of talented guards that included Luka Doncic, Stephen Curry, and Damian Lillard, who claimed all the guard spots. Morant's off-court behavior, for which he was suspended for eight games, further undermined his All-NBA chances. The extension Morant signed with the Grizzlies last summer was worth at least 25% of the salary cap ($192.2 million) and had the potential to increase to 30% ($231.4 million) with an All-NBA team selection. Although he missed on his contractual bonus, Morant will still cash in the richest contract in Grizzlies history: 5-years, $194 million.
