Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin recently returned to Cincinnati for the first time since he suffered cardiac arrest on the field. As a way to thank the UC Medical Staff who saved his life, Hamlin took them out to dinner and surprised each one with a scholarship in their name. Hamlin, through his charitable foundation called Chasing M's, will award $1,000 scholarships for the next three years to support young people in Cincinnati.
Hamlin expressed his gratitude for the medical professionals and the opportunity to honor them through the scholarship program. He said, "I'm humbled by the opportunity to set up a scholarship program to honor this team of professionals -- my Cincinnati heroes -- who helped save my life." Hamlin's charitable journey began while he was still a player at Pittsburgh, and he was inspired by his own experience as a scholarship recipient. He hopes that through the scholarships, he can lift up young people who are striving to achieve their dreams.
This heartwarming gesture from Hamlin serves as a reminder of the importance of CPR and the impact medical professionals have in saving lives. Hamlin's experience of surviving cardiac arrest raised awareness of commotio cordis and highlighted the need for preparedness and quick action in sports teams at all levels.
