Did Russia Launch a Massive Drone Attack on Ukraine's Capital?

Ukraine's capital, Kyiv, experienced what officials are calling Russia's largest drone attack of the war. The attack began in the early hours of Saturday and lasted for six hours, with more waves of drones coming as the sun rose. Initially, Ukraine's air force reported that 71 out of 75 drones had been shot down, but they later revised the number to 74, with 66 of those being downed over Kyiv and the surrounding region. The attack left five people wounded and caused damage to buildings across the city, including a fire in a children's nursery started by fragments from a downed drone.

This attack took place on an important day for Ukrainians, as they commemorate the Holodomor famine, where millions of people starved to death in 1932-1933. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy condemned the attack, calling it "wilful terror" and pointing out the parallel between the current Russian invasion and the genocide of the Holodomor.

Ukraine's air force and mobile fire units played a crucial role in downing the majority of the drones. The target of the attack remains unclear, but Ukraine has previously warned of Russia's intention to destroy the country's energy system through aerial campaigns. With the temperatures dropping, Ukraine is bracing for further attacks on its infrastructure throughout the winter.
