Australian tennis legend Evonne Goolagong Cawley has been honored by tournament organizers 50 years after her first Australian Open win. In a ceremony on Rod Laver Arena, it was announced that the Open's annual celebration of First Nations culture during the first week of the tournament will now be known as Evonne Goolagong Cawley Day. Additionally, Tennis Australia has donated $100,000 to Indigenous programs to continue Goolagong Cawley's work in improving the lives of Indigenous children. Goolagong Cawley, who won a total of seven major singles titles, is a shining example of humility and grace, both on and off the court. She has previously been celebrated with a bronze bust at Melbourne Park and has been inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame, the International Tennis Hall of Fame, and the Australian Tennis Hall of Fame. The renaming of the First Nations Day is a landmark change that ensures Goolagong Cawley's legacy will live on in the Australian Open.
