Why did Italy rally against violence against women?

Tens of thousands of people took to the streets in Italy to protest against violence against women. The rallies come in response to the murder of a university student, Giulia Cecchettin, allegedly by her ex-boyfriend. Italy's president, Sergio Mattarella, called the violence "unacceptable" and a "failure of society." According to data from the Italian interior ministry, 106 women have been killed in Italy this year, 55 of them by a partner or ex-partner. The protests took place on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, with events such as marches, runs, walks, flash mobs, and sit-ins happening across the country. Giulia Cecchettin's father unveiled a bench on her university campus in her memory. The protests show the public anger and soul-searching in Italy over the issue of violence against women. The government has responded by proposing new measures to clamp down on violence, including increased funds for anti-violence centers and women's refuges.
