Former President Donald Trump launched a scathing attack on Florida Governor Ron DeSantis during a campaign event in Iowa. Trump accused DeSantis of being against corn-based ethanol, an industry that Iowa leads in production. As a member of Congress, DeSantis co-sponsored a bill in 2017 that aimed to end the renewable fuel standard, which was seen as government overreach by fiscal conservatives. Trump claimed that DeSantis had been fighting against ethanol for years and voting against it as a congressman, which would have resulted in job losses. DeSantis' campaign responded by calling the attack a distortion and stating that as president, he would champion for farmers and open new markets for them. Trump touted his own record as the "most pro-farmer president" and declared his support for Iowa ethanol. While attacking DeSantis, Trump's own mixed record on biofuels could be scrutinized. Although he extended the sale of fuel blends with 15 percent ethanol, known as E15, his attempts to craft a deal on biofuels policy were unsuccessful.
