July 8, 2023

The Indian Meteorological Department has issued a 'Red alert' for extremely heavy monsoon rain in Himachal Pradesh on July 9. The alert applies to seven districts, including Chamba, Kangra, Kullu, Mandi, Una, Hamirpur, and Bilaspur. The red alert signifies the possibility of more than 204 mm of rainfall in a day.

In addition to the red alert, an orange warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall has been issued for Shimla, Sirmaur, Solan, and Lahaul and Spiti for July 8 and 9. The Met department predicts a wet spell in the state until July 13.

The weather office has also cautioned about the possibility of flash floods along water bodies and disruption of water, power, and communication facilities in the low and mid hills. The river Beas and its tributaries are flowing above the danger mark, and several roads and water supply schemes have been disrupted due to heavy rainfall.

Himachal Pradesh has already suffered a loss of Rs 352 crores during this monsoon season, according to the state emergency operation center.
